About Lis

When I was in my 40’s, I couldn’t wait to turn 50 so I could join AARP and get discounts at hotels and restaurants. Then I couldn’t wait to turn 55, so I could move into a 55+ community with swimming pools and tai chi classes and peace and quiet. Now I await Medicare, which provides some pretty great health insurance.
I’ve always been a health care researcher. Prior to becoming a licensed insurance agent, I spent hours each year poring over my choices with the Affordable Care Act, and I advised my friends and family as to what plan would work best for their budget and personal situation. Once my parents were eligible for Medicare, I paid close attention to the various plans that were offered. Once many Medicare Advantage plans began to offer fitness benefits, 65 became my next official Can’t Wait age.
My background is as a teacher. I taught college-level English as an adjunct professor for many years. That was a precarious way to make a living, and eventually I transitioned to teaching computers, and then to developing software. I was a decent software developer, but I found that the part of the job I really loved was talking with clients and potential clients. When people called to ask for my help, I always began by listening. I let people talk, I mostly didn’t interrupt, and I learned exactly what they needed. At least half the time I would tell them that they didn’t need to hire me – that there was a simpler, less expensive solution to their issue. And when they did hire me, I was in constant communication, making sure that I gave them what they wanted, not what I thought they should want.
Over the years, I realized that I still loved talking with clients, but I had less patience for the actual programming. One day I had a networking coffee with someone I had just met and when she began to tell me about her job as a Medicare insurance agent, I realized she was describing my dream job. I had spent the night before poring over the details of a particular Medicare Advantage plan after my neighbor fell and was not sure how much the ambulance was going to cost her.
Now, I am here to help you. There are a myriad of options for Medicare coverage. There are also many programs that offer savings for people in certain income brackets, and no two plans are alike. My job is to listen to you, to understand your needs and values, and help you find the plan for you and your individual situation. I’m also a pretty huge spreadsheet nerd, and enjoy creating cost comparisons for my clients.
I’d love to talk to you, so please feel free to call me at 503.334.3596 or email lisbinsurance@gmail.com
